Brandi's PledgePage for Cleveland AIDS Walk 2003
INTRO:
The Dr. John Carey Memorial AIDS Walk/Run raises much-needed funding to support the HIV/AIDS programs and services of 8 nonprofit organizations. All of the money raised remains in Greater Cleveland and--for the past seven years--corporate support of the event has more than covered the costs associated with producing the event, thus allowing every dollar raised by participants to go directly to support the important programs of the 8 benefiting organizations. In 1995, the event was renamed in honor of Dr. John T. Carey, one of Cleveland's earliest pioneers of HIV/AIDS care and treatment. A compassionate and skilled physician and a tireless advocate for persons living with HIV, Dr. Carey raised money, heightened awareness and made a lasting impact on the lives that he touched. Just weeks after his sudden death in 1995, the Cleveland AIDS Walk was renamed in his memory and still bears his name today. In this and countless other ways, his memory lives on. THE WALK The Cleveland AIDS Walk/Run is a 5-Kilometer pledge event. Participants may choose to walk or run and may participate individually or as part of an organized team of 10 or more. The event, which attracts approximately 3,000 participants each year, raised $275,000 last year. Event organizers hope to raise $300,000 in 2003. Funds raised go to support the HIV/AIDS programs and services of 8 nonprofit organizations including: The AIDS Taskforce of Greater Cleveland; The Free Clinic of Greater Cleveland; The Lesbian/Gay Community Service Center; Planned Parenthood of Greater Cleveland; The Women's Center of Greater Cleveland; and Antioch/Cleveland Clinic Partnership's AGAPE Program, Hispanic UMADAOP and Ohio AIDS Coalition. LOCATION: The Cleveland AIDS Walk/Run will once again take place at Edgewater Park, on the shores of Lake Erie in Downtown Cleveland. The 5k Walk route takes walkers from Edgewater Park, west on Edgewater Dr., past some of Cleveland's most beautiful lakefront homes. Walkers then head south on W. 117th St., east on bustling Clifton Blvd., and north on West Blvd. back to Edgewater Park. The scenic 5-k Run route keeps runners within the confines of Edgewater Park.
